Coastal Golf Communities Ocean City, MD and Delaware Beaches
With several residential golf communities and country clubs, there are no shortage of courses on which to play a round or partake in tournaments.With pristine views and well-maintained greens just miles from the ocean, it’s no wonder these facilities draw thousands of players to the area each year. Be sure to check out some of these local favorites.
Eagle’s Landing: Situated along the Sinepuxent Bay, just outside of Ocean City, Eagle’s Landing Golf Course is dubbed the resort’s premier golfing destination. The 7,000-yard course winds its way around lakes, ponds and saltmarshes, with a variety of water holes, sand bunkers, elevated tees and expansive fairways. Eagle’s Landing is also dedicated to the protection of natural resources by reducing chemical use, integrating natural pest management methods and recirculating irrigation water. The property is also the first fully certified Audubon Sanctuary in the state.
Rum Pointe Seaside Golf Links: Rum Pointe is a Scottish-style golf course with 17 of the 18 holes having bay views. Several even have direct bay frontage. Rich in history, the property features one of the few pre-Revolutionary War dwellings in Worcester County and the remains of seven Native American cultures. In the 1990s, world renowned golf architects were hired to create a world-class course. Today, Rum Pointe features bent-grass on the fairways and greens, a restaurant and pro shop, and an in-car electronic yardage system, among other things.
Ocean City Golf Club: With two courses, Ocean City Golf Club offers unique layouts for golfers of all skill levels. The property’s Seaside Course, established in 1959, features a combination of traditional design, wide fairways and tightly guarded greens, while the redesigned and rebuilt Newport Bay Course features marsh and bay vistas. In total, the course features 36 holes, a 250-seat clubhouse and annual tournaments. Staff are also on hand to help you learn the game of golf. Lessons can be booked for all skill levels.
The Links at Lighthouse Sound: Lighthouse Sound was developed in 2000 as an 18-hole course with views of the neighboring bay and Ocean City skyline. Ten holes even border pristine marshland, located within the 1,000-acre site. The course is also unique, in that it is home to the country’s longest cart bridge andfeatures the only consecutive holes in the U.S. playing to the same double green. Lighthouse Sound features a restaurant and banquet hall, with a community surrounding the course. But in its commitment to protect the marsh and woodlands, the course is designed to collect and recycle water, chemicals and stormwater runoff using an underground drainage system.
Glen Riddle Golf Club: Featuring two 18-hole championship courses, Glen Riddle Golf Club aims to build a nationally recognized property. The site’s clubhouse building was once the main stable building of Riddle Farm, which produced famous racehorses such as Man O’ War, War Admiral and Sea Biscuit. Today, it features a museum hall, as well as golf and restaurant operations. While its War Admiral Course is a private course for members, GlenRiddle also offers a public Man O’ War Course, which plays 7,196 yards and a par of 72. After a day on the greens, be sure to swing by Ruth’s Chris Steak House for a delicious meal.
Ocean Pines Golf Club: Ocean Pines Golf Club is the only Robert Trent Jones championship course on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Opened in 1972, the course features 18 holes that cut through native pines and meander around natural wetlands.The golf club is open to the publis, with memberships available. In addition to its course, the property features a new clubhouse with dining and a full-service golf shop, a sheltered driving area, practice chipping, pitching and putting greens and a modern learning center, among other things. Be sure to check out the local tournaments and clinics held at the course throughout the year.
River Run Golf Club: Located just outside Ocean City, River Run Golf Club is an 18-hole course with unique layouts and bent-grass on the tees, fairways and greens. The course was created by Gary Player and features an open front nine and a tight back nine, making play suitable for both beginners and expert golfers. Light breakfast and dinner is also served at The Hideaway Restaurant, located within the River Run Clubhouse.
Bayside Resort Golf Club: Bayside Resort Golf Club, located in Selbyville, Del., features a Jack Nicklaus signature golf course. The 18 holes wind along the Assawoman Bay coastline and through pine forests, making for scenic views. The golf club also features a resort club, complete with a waterfront restaurant, tenniscourts, fitness centers and nature trails, among other things.
Baywood Greens Golf Course: Dubbed a challenging yet forgiving course, Baywood Greens is an 18-hole championship course located minutes from historic Lewes and Rehoboth Beach. Each player is greeted by a knowledgeable player’s assistant and given a golf cart with a state-of-the-art GPS system. The course also features two distinctive nines -the Woodside nine featuring tree-lined fairways and the Waterside nine featuring man-made ponds. Baywood Greens also offers fine dining at its clubhouse.
The Salt Pond Golf Club: The Salt Pond Golf Club is a public 18-hole, mid-length course situation within a 538-home community in Bethany Beach. With manicured greens, beautiful fairways, and surrounding ponds and woodlands, the course offers a unique playing experience for any golfer. The golf club also offers memberships, weekly events, a pro shop and Birdies Snack Bar. Also be sure to check out the tournaments and scrambles held annually at the course.
Midway Par 3 Golf Course: Minutes from downtown Rehoboth Beach and Lewes, Del., Midway Par 3 Golf Course is billed as a great place to learn and play golf. With no water or bunkers, and holes ranging from 65-150 yards long, the course can be played by golfers of any age or skill level in just a couple hours. Midway also has lessons and clinics, and a round of 18-hole golf can be played for just $18 (or $14 for juniors ages10 and under).
American Classic Golf Club: If you are looking for something more offbeat, look no further than American Classic Golf Club, a 9-hole course in Lewes. Loud clothes are encouraged, sandwiches are named after rock n’ roll legends and golf carts are decked out in the American flag. TheClassic has both water and sand hazards, an island green, and different tee markers, making the course great for all types of players. It also has a full bar and cafe.
Kings Creek Country Club: Kings Creek Country Club has been voted “Best Private Golf Course Reader’s Pick, Downstate” three years in a row by Delaware Today. As a member, you can enjoy premier golf courses. Kings Creek has an 18-hole, par-71 championship course with five sets of tees for all skill levels, as well as a practice facility that includes a driving range, golf learning center, golf simulator, putting greens and a short-game practice area. The club also offers mens and ladies golf associations, leagues and tournaments.
Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club: Located in Ocean View, Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club offers a unique golfing experience just a few short miles from the beach. The 27-hole course features bent-grass fairways lined with native wetlands and sand dunes, as well as groomed oversized greens, among other things. The golf club also features a golf shop and bar and grill.
Bethany Bay Golf Club: Bethany Bay Golf Club, a 9-hole, par-3 course, is situated along the Indian River Bay. In addition to bay views and a mix of bent-grass/Bermuda tees, the course has hole lengths ranging from 99-199 yards. The club also features a monarch butterfly waystation, a bluebird nesting trail and naturalized native grass areas. The course also employs best management practices in its effort to conserve the natural habitat.
Rehoboth Beach Country Club: With multiple tees, sculpted greens and fairways, and challenging bunkers and ponds, Rehoboth Beach Country Club challenges golfers of all skill levels. The 18-hole course was also the first in Delaware to receive the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary designation. The facilities feature golf clinics, a two-sided driving range, a large putting green, dedicated chipping areas and a full-service golf shop.
